The first being that effective communication can help me to form positive bonds and strengthen my existing relationships with my family and peers. When I was a small child, I used to be very shy and awkward in social settings. It was very uncomfortable situation to be in. So I learned it the hard way of the importance in being able to communicate freely and effectively with those around me. With effective communication skills, I’ll be able to form new relationships with ease and feel confident in social settings.
The other reason being, I give private tuitions and my communicative skills will determine how effective it is for me to bring across what I am teaching to all my students. This way, it can greatly enhanced the learning of my students and increase my efficiency as a tutor.
Furthermore, I foresee communications skills being very crucial in future after I graduate and hit the workforce. Learning to have effective communications can greatly enhance my opportunities to secure a good job as I go through the interviews and excel in my chosen career. In today’s workforce, there is more emphasis being placed on people’s skills and having effective communication skills can greatly help when to comes to dealing with colleagues, bosses or clients. Being able to communicate well means I am able to put my idea across effectively and able to persuade better.
Hey Jeremy,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that not only is effective communication important in the workforce but also among our families and friends. Especially when our friends are of a different culture and English may not be their first language, this means putting in more effort in holding a conversation. Hence, our attitude(being patient and understanding) matters too in order for effective communication to take place.
Although i'm only an administrator in a tuition centre now, I do see how crucial the skills are. I have to constantly ensure that I speak with clarity so that the parents will understand our courses and policies. At times I find myself repeating the same point as I couldn't explain myself clearly. Besides that, being polite also comes into play when we have to reject their request to accept their child in a class which is already full. We have to communicate in a way that we value our customers and at the same time seek their understanding so as to leave a good impression on the centre.
I believe your tutoring is also a good platform to practise effective communication. :)
Hey Jeremy,
ReplyDeleteBeing a private tutor myself, I definitely identify with your statement on how crucial effective communication skills are to the job. It's worse if we get foreign students whose weak command of the English language becomes a major barrier to communication. It then becomes our job to find creative ways to break those barriers down.
Like you, I would also like to learn to communicate effectively in the workplace. Taking this module is beginning with the end in mind! =P
Hey Jeremy,
ReplyDeleteI have to agree strongly regarding your second reason when it comes to teaching tution. While teaching, we have to bring across the point clearly to the student in the given time. Being able to communicate well with the student and the parents would bring more income and of course the joy from the result of the student.
Agree that when we go into workplace we need to make sure that we are able to communicate effectively. If we were not able to let our superior know what we are trying to present, soon after the presentation we might be out of job.
Enjoy the course.

To Veenee,
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your experience on how effective communication can affect your performance during your job. I believe as we graduate and enter the workforce, we will start to face more of such similar situation. During those times, i believe there is a more evident need for us to excel in our communication skill.
To Keefe,
ReplyDeleteThanks for highlighting to me your experience on the language barrier. I believe being better equipped with communications skills, we will be able to find a creative solution to break down any possible communication barriers.
To Tommy,
ReplyDeleteDefinately having better communications skills will benefit the teaching process. More importantly, we are able to engage the student and help them learn better. Thus, effective communication skills can be put to good use during tutoring to allow ourselves to have a better time teaching. =)
I enjoyed reading your first post, Jeremy. The post is organised and very well-focused; you wasted no time in sharing with us why effective communication skills are important to you.
